1. Fiber Identification & Dye Testing

Before anything else, we confirm whether your rug is pure silk, wool-silk blend, or silk foundation with wool pile — each requires a different approach. We test every color for colorfastness using controlled micro-applications. Silk dyes can be more sensitive than wool dyes, and we need to map the entire rug's dye stability before proceeding.

2. Gentle Dusting

Silk fibers are finer and more tightly packed than wool, which means dust particles embed differently. We use a gentler dusting approach for silk rugs — enough to remove embedded Arizona desert grit without stressing the delicate fiber structure.

3. pH-Neutral Submersion Wash

This is where silk cleaning diverges most from wool. We use strictly pH-neutral cleaning agents — never the alkaline solutions that are standard for wool. Water temperature is kept cool and controlled. Agitation is minimal and entirely by hand. The rug is fully submerged so contaminants are flushed from the foundation, but every movement is deliberate and gentle.

4. Thorough Rinse

Every trace of cleaning agent is rinsed away. Even pH-neutral residue left in silk can affect the fiber's sheen over time. We rinse until the water is completely clear.

5. Low-Temperature Flat Drying

Silk rugs are dried flat at room temperature in a controlled environment with good air circulation. No heat. No direct sunlight. No tension on the fibers. 6. Sheen Restoration & Inspection

After drying, we carefully groom the silk pile to restore its characteristic luminous sheen and directional play of light. Fringe and edges are inspected. A final quality check ensures the rug meets our standards before it's wrapped for return delivery.
