Our Antique Rug Cleaning Process

1. Comprehensive Assessment

Every antique rug receives an extended evaluation before any cleaning begins. We examine the foundation's structural integrity (is it still flexible or has it become brittle?), the fiber condition (is the wool still resilient or has it become dry and fragile?), the dye stability (are the colors still holding or are they ready to migrate?), and existing damage (open areas, worn pile, weakened fringe, previous repairs). This assessment determines every decision that follows.

2. Careful Dye Testing

Antique dyes — particularly natural vegetable dyes and early synthetic aniline dyes — can be unpredictable after decades of aging. We test every color in the rug using micro-moisture applications. On very old pieces, we may test the same color in multiple areas, because dye stability can vary across a single rug depending on exposure to light, moisture, and wear over its lifetime.

3. Conservative Dusting

Antique rugs have been accumulating dust for decades — sometimes a century or more. But fragile fibers can't withstand the same mechanical dusting force as a newer rug. We calibrate our dusting approach to the rug's condition, removing as much embedded particulate as safely possible without stressing aged fibers.

4. Gentle Submersion Wash

Using the mildest cleaning agents appropriate for the rug's fiber type and dye chemistry, we hand-wash with minimal agitation at carefully controlled cool temperatures. On extremely fragile antiques, we may use a supported wash technique — placing the rug on a screen that provides structural support during submersion, preventing any stress on a weakened foundation.

5. Gradual Rinse

A thorough but gentle rinse removes all cleaning agents and decades of accumulated contaminants. On antique pieces, we avoid any sudden changes in water temperature or flow rate that could shock fragile fibers.

6. Slow, Controlled Flat Drying

Antique rugs are dried flat at room temperature with gentle air circulation. No heat, no sun, no rush. The fibers need to release moisture gradually — rapid drying can cause older wool to contract unevenly and older foundations to warp. We monitor the drying process and adjust positioning as needed to ensure even drying across the entire rug.

7. Post-Cleaning Inspection

After drying, we inspect the rug thoroughly — comparing its post-cleaning condition to our pre-cleaning assessment. We note any areas that may benefit from repair and discuss our findings with you before returning the rug.
