What Makes Oriental Rug Cleaning Different

"Oriental rug" is the broadest category in the handmade rug world — it covers any hand-knotted or hand-woven rug produced in Asia. That means a Turkish Oushak, an Afghan Kazak, a Chinese Art Deco, an Indian Agra, and a Pakistani Bokhara are all "Oriental rugs" — but each one has completely different construction, different fiber characteristics, different dye chemistry, and different cleaning requirements.

This is why taking your Oriental rug to a general carpet cleaning company is risky. A carpet cleaner treats every rug the same way — one chemical, one temperature, one process. But the Turkish rug that's perfectly safe at a certain water temperature may be the exact temperature that causes dye bleeding on an Afghan piece. The agitation level that's fine for a thick Pakistani Bokhara could warp a delicate Chinese silk.

At Scottsdale Rug Cleaning, we identify your rug's exact origin, construction type, fiber content, and dye method before we touch it. Then we customize every step of the cleaning process to match. That's the difference between a specialist and a carpet cleaner — and it's the difference between a rug that comes back looking beautiful and one that comes back damaged.

Every Origin. Every Construction. Every Fiber.

We've been cleaning Oriental rugs from every weaving region for over 30 years. Turkish symmetric knots, Persian asymmetric knots, Indian hand-loomed construction, Chinese closed-back technique — we understand the structural differences that determine how each rug should be cleaned, and we tailor our process accordingly.

Our Oriental Rug Cleaning Process

1. Origin Identification & Dye Testing

We examine your rug to determine its exact origin, construction type, fiber content, and dye method. Every color is tested for colorfastness — certain Afghan dyes, Chinese vegetable dyes, and Indian synthetic dyes have very different sensitivities to water and cleaning agents. We need to know this before any cleaning begins.

2. Deep Mechanical Dusting

Arizona's Sonoran Desert particulate is one of the biggest threats to Oriental rugs in Scottsdale homes. Before water touches the rug, we mechanically remove all embedded grit from the knot structure. Washing without dusting first turns that fine desert sand into abrasive mud inside your rug's foundation.

3. Full-Submersion Hand Wash

Your Oriental rug is fully submerged and hand-washed using cleaning agents specifically selected for its fiber type and dye characteristics. A Turkish wool rug gets different treatment than a Chinese silk piece. An antique Afghan gets different treatment than a new Indian reproduction. No steam, no machine agitation — only hand washing.

4. Complete Rinse

We rinse until the water runs completely clear. Every trace of cleaning agent is removed — residual soap attracts dirt faster and causes fibers to become dull and sticky.

5. Controlled Flat Drying

Dried flat in a controlled environment at room temperature. No high-heat dryers that shrink natural fibers. No direct sunlight that fades dyes. Flat-woven Oriental pieces are dried under gentle tension to prevent warping.

6. Grooming & Quality Inspection

We groom the pile to restore its natural direction, inspect fringe and edges for any issues that need attention, and perform a final quality check before wrapping your rug for return delivery.

Persian Rugs Are Oriental Rugs Too

If your rug is specifically Persian (from Iran) — Tabriz, Isfahan, Heriz, Kashan, Nain, or Qum — visit our dedicated Persian rug cleaning page for details on our specialized approach to the world's most celebrated rugs.

We Also Repair Oriental Rugs

During our cleaning inspection, we frequently discover damage that needs attention — moth activity (a year-round threat in Arizona's warm climate), loosening fringe, fraying edges, or areas of wear that need reweaving. We handle all Oriental rug repair and restoration in-house using traditional hand techniques. A small repair caught during cleaning prevents a costly restoration later. Frequently Asked Questions

Oriental rugs should be cleaned using a full-submersion hand-wash process — never steam cleaned. Each Oriental rug type has different fibers, dyes, and construction requiring a tailored approach. A specialist who understands these differences will clean your rug safely and effectively.

Costs depend on size, fiber type, construction, condition, and cleaning level required. Heavily soiled rugs and pet contamination may need additional treatment. Free estimates with free pickup and delivery. Call (480) 219-8095.

All Persian rugs are Oriental rugs, but not all Oriental rugs are Persian. "Oriental rug" covers any handmade rug from Asia — Turkey, Afghanistan, India, China, Pakistan, the Caucasus. "Persian rug" refers specifically to rugs from Iran. Each origin has its own cleaning requirements.

Yes. Steam cleaning causes dye bleeding, wool shrinkage, silk damage, foundation warping, and trapped moisture leading to mildew. Oriental rugs should only be cleaned using full-submersion hand washing at controlled temperatures.

Every 3-5 years for normal use, or every 2-3 years with pets, children, or heavy traffic. Arizona's desert dust embeds deep in the knot structure and grinds through fibers. Regular cleaning removes this grit and extends your rug's life by decades.
