Kilim Rugs Are Not Pile Rugs — And They Can't Be Cleaned Like One
Kilim rugs are flat-woven — they have no pile, no knots, and no cushioned surface. The warp and weft threads that form the rug's entire structure are completely exposed. When you look at a Kilim, you're looking directly at the structural fibers themselves. This makes Kilims lighter, more flexible, and more versatile than knotted pile rugs — but it also makes them far more vulnerable during cleaning.
The two biggest risks when cleaning a Kilim are shrinkage and dye bleeding. Hot water causes the wool warp and weft to contract — and because there's no pile to absorb the dimensional change, the entire rug shrinks. We've seen Kilims come back from carpet cleaners 10-15% smaller than when they went in — a 5x8 that returns as a 4.5x7. That damage is permanent.
Dye bleeding is equally dangerous. Many Kilims — especially Turkish, Afghan, and antique Persian Kilims — use dyes that are more sensitive to water than the dyes used in knotted pile rugs. The flat-weave structure means there's nowhere for migrating dye to hide — when colors bleed on a Kilim, the damage is immediately and completely visible.

Our Kilim Cleaning Process
1. Dimensional Measurement & Dye Testing
We measure your Kilim's exact dimensions before cleaning — this is our baseline for verifying that no shrinkage occurs. We then test every color for colorfastness. Kilim dyes vary enormously by origin — Turkish Anatolian dyes behave differently than Afghan Maimana dyes, which behave differently than Persian Senneh Kilim dyes. We need to know the dye stability before water touches the textile.
2. Flat-Weave Dusting
Kilims trap dust differently than pile rugs — particles settle between the warp and weft threads rather than sinking to the base of knots. We dust Kilims using methods calibrated for flat construction, removing embedded Arizona desert grit without stressing the exposed weave structure.
3. Controlled Temperature Hand Wash
Your Kilim is hand-washed at carefully controlled cool temperatures using cleaning agents selected for its specific fiber and dye characteristics. Agitation is gentler than what we'd use on a pile rug — the exposed foundation can't take the same mechanical stress. Full submersion ensures contaminants are flushed from between the warp and weft, but every step is measured and deliberate.
4. Complete Rinse
Thorough rinsing at the same controlled temperature — no sudden temperature changes that could cause the wool to contract. Every trace of cleaning agent is removed.
5. Tension-Controlled Flat Drying
This is the most critical step for Kilim cleaning. We dry every Kilim flat under gentle, even tension that maintains the rug's original dimensions. Without tension, a wet Kilim will contract unevenly as it dries, leaving you with a rug that has wavy edges, curled corners, or reduced dimensions. Our tension drying is slow and carefully monitored — we don't rush it.
6. Post-Cleaning Measurement & Inspection
After drying, we measure the Kilim again and compare to our pre-cleaning baseline. We inspect the weave, selvedge edges, and end finishes for any issues. Your Kilim is wrapped flat for return delivery — never folded in a way that could create permanent creases.
